Mini sessions in Cypress Hills are a beautiful way to capture your family, the colours in the fall are absolutly stunning and the scenery provides the perfect backdrop. Mini sessions are only 15 minutes long so a little preparation makes all the difference. Here are my best tips to help things go smoothly:
Dress in layers. The Hills are always cooler than the prairies, and nothing is harder to photograph than a cold kid. Dress in layers (think denim jackets, chunky sweaters, puffy vests etc.) to keep everyone comfortable. Want more ideas on what to wear? Check out this blog post.
Give yourself extra time. Kids often fall asleep on the drive, so plan a few minutes to wake them up and get settled before we start. Arriving early means less stress and more relaxed smiles.
Stay calm and enjoy it. Your kids will mirror your energy. If you’re relaxed and having fun, they will too and that’s what creates the most genuine photos.
Wear practical shoes. We’ll likely be walking through grass or uneven ground. Skip the heels and choose shoes that look good but let you move comfortably.
Make sure everyone is fed. A hungry toddler (or grown-up!) is rarely in the mood for smiling photos. Plan to eat before your session, and if it’s close to mealtime, bring a quick (non messy) snack to tide everyone over. Full bellies = happier faces.
Bring a small “just in case” kit. A favorite toy, a small treat (white mini marshmallows work great!), or even wipes for sticky fingers can be a lifesaver if little ones need a quick reset. Sometimes it’s the smallest things that help keep kids comfortable and engaged.
Expect imperfection — and embrace it. Don’t worry if your kids aren’t standing perfectly still or smiling at the camera the whole time. Some of the best photos come from candid giggles, snuggles, or the way your family naturally interacts. Your session isn’t about perfection; it’s about connection.
Mini sessions are designed to be short, sweet and painless to capture a few fleeting moments with your family. I can’t wait to tell your families story this fall!
